The Hearth Tax Returns for Norton Parish - 1666 |
|
The Hearth Tax, or Chimney Tax as it was sometimes called, was a payment to the King of two shillings on every hearth. It was levied between 1662 and 1689 when it was stopped because of its unpopularity. The lists gave the names of the persons who paid and the number of hearths assessed for each person. People were assessed as "No Hearths" who did not pay a rent of twenty shillings or more per year, or who owned less than £10 of real or personal estate. The following are copies of the pages for Norton in le Moors taken from the “Historical Collections of Staffordshire 1921 Edition” A Transcript copy can be found here |
