St Peter's Church Alton Staffordshire

St. Peter's Church at Alton is in the Rural Deanery of Cheadle. The Church is an ancient one dating from the 12th century and built by Bertram de Verdun who also built Alton Castle (whose ruins are nearby). The church was partially rebuilt in 1830 and restored in 1862, again in 1892, and yet again in 1935 when several writings and pictures dating from 1135 were uncovered on the walls. The font, with tracery and shields, is 15th Century. The registers of baptisms, marriages, and burials from 1681 to 1746 together with BTs 1676-1682 & 1746-1758, and Banns from 1754-1769, have been transcribed and printed by the Staffordshire Parish Registers Society and are still available from them. The later registers, baptisms to 1892, marriages to 1882, and burials to 1952 are deposited in Stafford R.O. BTs up to 1852 survive at Lichfield J.R.O. The parish consists of the two townships of Alton and Farley, and is now combined with the parish of Bradley in the Moors.
